What do the major coin grading companies have in common?

In the world of coin collecting, CAC, NGC, and PCGS are closely connected, but they serve distinct roles that together help establish trust and consistency in the marketplace.

PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) are the two leading third-party grading services. Their primary responsibility is to authenticate coins, assign them a numerical grade based on condition, and encapsulate them in protective holders, commonly known as “slabs.” This process provides collectors and investors with confidence that a coin is genuine and professionally evaluated.

CAC (Certified Acceptance Corporation), grades coins from scratch but it also acts as a secondary verification service that reviews coins already graded by PCGS or NGC. CAC’s role is to determine whether a coin meets high standards for the grade it has been assigned. In other words, it evaluates whether a coin is average, above average, or exceptional within its grade category.

When a coin meets CAC’s criteria, it receives a small sticker placed on the slab. A green sticker indicates that the coin is solid or high-end for its assigned grade, while a gold sticker signifies that the coin may actually be undegraded and could warrant a higher grade. This additional layer of review provides collectors with greater assurance about the quality of a coin beyond the initial grading.

Together, these three entities form a system of checks and balances within the numismatic market. PCGS and NGC establish the baseline by grading and authenticating coins, while CAC refines that assessment by identifying coins that stand out within their grade. As a result, coins that carry a CAC sticker often command higher prices and greater demand, as they are perceived to offer superior quality and reliability.
